Hayes, Esq., Executive Director* Phone: 609-499-3600, x237 Fax: 609-499-3647 Website: www.swpg.rutgers.edu ** Email: hayes@aesop.rutgers.edu *_Green Purchasing for Human Health_* *A workshop for Higher Education Facilities in New Jersey* Solid Waste Policy Group will be holding a workshop on *Green Purchasing for Human Health *this fall. The half day workshop will be specifically targeted to higher education institutions and focus on cleaning products, paint, laboratories, and art studios/facilities--all from a very practical, obstacle overcoming point of view. We are inviting representatives of facilities management, purchasing, building design, and policy people. Let us know if you are interested and would like more information for putting together a team from your institution to attend. The workshop will focus on: *_Indoor air quality and human health_* Health hazards related to: paint; cleaning products; art studios; and laboratories. For example: Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) present in many cleaners, paints, and other chemicals, can cause physical problems including breathing problems, headaches, nausea, and muscle weakness. Indoor VOC levels are consistently ten times higher than outdoors, and can be 1,000 times higher after a new coat of paint. *_Overcoming perceived obstacles to switching to green products_* Environmentally-friendly products are now just as effective and competitively priced as their chemical counterparts, and can actually /save/ your facility money with reduced number of sick days/health costs/liability claims, reduced disposal costs, higher worker productivity, etc. Less environmental impact = cheaper and easier disposal. *_Finding the right green products to meet your facility's needs_* What are the needs of your facility? What products will best satisfy those needs while improving the overall health of your facility's employees and other users? Students, faculty, and staff need to be educated about why the restroom should not smell of bleach. Planning ahead means collaborating with the cleaning staff to choose the best surfaces for cleaning with the least harmful products. There will be three workshops held- one for northern New Jersey, one for central New Jersey, and one for southern New Jersey. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided. * The central Jersey workshop will be held on Monday October 3^rd , 2005 at Princeton University from 9:00 -2:00. * The second workshop will be at Ramapo College in Mahwah, on Thursday October 20^th from 9:00- 2:00 as well. The southern Jersey workshop will be held in early November at the Rutgers EcoComplex in Bordentown, NJ.** * *If you would like to attend any one of the regional workshops, or would like further information, contact Priscilla E. Hayes at 609-499-3600, ext. 237 or _hayes@aesop.rutgers.edu_ **Please forward this to any colleagues you think would be interested** -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
