Ten selected campuses will be visited by RMI and later will receive funding to collaborate in an RMI workshop with AASHE and interested funders. Campuses will be assisted in strengthening their climate-change initiatives related to campus operations. They will be eligible to receive modest seed funding for high-potential projects after they have completed the workshop. The project will ultimately result in a web-based RMI framework for operations-based campus-climate action. Proposals are due September 3rd. "There's no need to make toilet paper out of wonderful 100 year old trees." What: Release of INFORM's new short film, The Secret Life of Paper , on the environmental impacts of paper and the benefits of buying recycled paper products. This is the second film in the Secret Life Series, highlighting the environmental impacts of everyday objects. The video contains interview segments with Thomas Henningsen of Greenpeace, George Milner of Mohawk Fine Papers, Inc. and INFORM's Senior Fellow Bette Fishbein. It also details ways business, citizens and government can "cast a vote for the environment." Why: > * Today, only one-fifth of the world's ancient forests remain. * Deforestation aggravates climate change as trees keep the climate stable by storing carbon and converting carbon dioxide into oxygen. * A significant part of deforestation worldwide is attributed to the pulp and paper industry, which is the fourth largest emitter of greenhouse gases among manufacturing industries in the US. * More than 50% of the paper Americans consume ends up in landfills or incinerators. When paper is landfilled, it decomposes and releases methane, a greenhouse gas 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide. * Producing 100% post consumer recycled copy paper reduces solid waste by 49%, wastewater by 46% and total energy consumption by 42%. When: Official release: Monday, August 11th, 2008 online at www.secretlife.org and be among the first to see The Secret Life of Paper before its general release. As part of its campaign to inform the public about the environmental impact of paper, INFORM will be releasing a comprehensive report in early fall which catalogs the recycled paper standards in use by the U.S. government and by each state government. The report will identify best practices and highlight those states that are at the forefront of environmentally sound procurement policies and practices. ### INFORM, Inc. is a New York based environmental media and advocacy organization dedicated to educating the public about the effects of human activity on the environment and human health. Our goal is to empower citizens, business and government to adopt practices and policies that will sustain our planet and future generations.| www.informinc.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
